Peter Schofield: Links between neighbourhood social composition and refugee mental health – evidence from a Danish cohort study

Vortrag

Online event in the frameworks of Refugee Mental Health and Place Series

„Links between neighbourhood social composition and refugee mental health – evidence from a Danish cohort study”
Speaker: Peter Schofield
When: 22 May 2024 from 16:00–17:30 GMT
Format: Online

Abstract:

In this presentation, we present a summary of a large cohort study looking at the importance of the neighbourhood social environment for refugee mental health. A cohort of 44,033 refugees were followed who had originally been housed under the Danish dispersal policy. Because housing was assigned without any face-to-face contact with officials, the effect of the neighbourhood could be examined independently of individual characteristics. The results show how different types of neighbourhood social environments relate to a range of subsequent mental disorders, and discuss the implications for services and future policy approaches.

About the speaker:

Peter Schofield is a Senior Lecturer in Population Health in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine at King’s College London. He uses mixed methods approaches combining advanced statistical methods with in-depth qualitative analysis to study how the social environment shapes our experience of mental disorders. Recently, he has been working on an MRC study investigating the role of place in refugee mental health and helped set up the Refugee Mental Health & Place Network.

Yashua Alkali, Aminu Dukku, Umar Tarajim: Vaccines encounters in Nigeria’s Kano State

Vortrag

Hybrid event in the frameworks of LSHTM Medical Anthropology Seminar Series (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine)

„Vaccines encounters in Nigeria’s Kano State”
Speaker: Yashua Alkali, Aminu Dukku, Umar Tarajim
When: 8 May 2024, 16:00 – 17:15

Please join the next LSHTM Medical Anthropology Seminar Series. Dr Yashua Alkali, Dr Aminu Dukku and Umar Tarajim will reflect on findings of their recent study on vaccination in Kano State, Nigeria.

In 2019, the World Health Organisation (WHO) named ‘vaccine hesitancy’ amongst its top global threats. In recent years, and particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been renewed attention worldwide on the need to build trust in vaccination. Community engagement, for example, has become a key component of health agencies’ efforts to deliver effective vaccination campaigns. Significant challenges however remain, both in understanding drivers of vaccine confidence in context and in engaging communities at all stages of the vaccine deployment process. In this Medical Anthropology Seminar, researchers from the Childcare and Wellness Clinics will discuss findings from their recent study on community engagement for vaccination in Kano State, Northern Nigeria.
